Who is the 189 visa for?

The 189 suits skilled professionals and tradespeople whose occupation is on the relevant skilled occupation list and who can score highly on the points test. Because there is no sponsor, competition for invitations is strong, and invitation rounds usually favour occupations in shortage and applicants with high points.

Key requirements

  • An occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • A suitable skills assessment for that occupation
  • An Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect and an invitation to apply
  • At least 65 points on the points test (invitations are often issued well above this)
  • Under 45 years of age at the time of invitation
  • At least Competent English
  • Health and character requirements

How points are scored

Age

The most points go to applicants aged 25 to 32.

English

Proficient or Superior English adds significant points.

Work experience

Skilled employment in Australia or overseas, in or closely related to your occupation.

Education and extras

Qualifications, Australian study, regional study, specialist education, Professional Year, NAATI credentialled community language and partner skills.

Check your score with our points calculator or read our points test guide.

The 189 streams

Most applicants use the points-tested stream. There are also separate New Zealand and Hong Kong streams for eligible New Zealand citizens and Hong Kong passport holders with specific residence histories.

Frequently asked questions

Is 65 points enough for a 189 invitation?

65 is only the minimum to lodge an EOI. Invitation cut-offs depend on your occupation and the invitation round, and are often much higher. We can suggest realistic ways to raise your points.

Can I apply for 189 and 190 at the same time?

Yes. One EOI can select the 189, 190 and 491, which increases your chances of receiving an invitation.

How long is an EOI valid?

An EOI stays in SkillSelect for two years. Keep it updated when your points change, for example after a new English test or more work experience.

Can I live anywhere in Australia on a 189?

Yes. There are no location conditions on the 189, unlike the 190 or 491.
