Skills Assessment for Australian Migration
A skills assessment confirms that your qualifications and work experience match the standard of your nominated occupation in Australia. It is required for most skilled visas, including the 189, 190, 491, 494 and many 186 applications.
Choosing the wrong occupation or assessing authority is one of the most common and costly mistakes. We help you choose the right ANZSCO occupation, prepare evidence and apply to the correct authority.
ICT professionals
Assessed by the Australian Computer Society (ACS), including RPL pathways for people without an ICT degree.
Engineers
Assessed by Engineers Australia through a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) or accredited qualification pathways.
Trades
Assessed by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) or VETASSESS, often including a practical or technical interview.
Managers and professionals
Many management, business and other professional occupations are assessed by VETASSESS.
Nurses and health
Nurses and midwives by ANMAC, and other health professionals by their relevant professional body.
Teachers and accountants
Teachers by AITSL, and accountants by CPA Australia, CA ANZ or IPA.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a skills assessment take?
It varies by authority and application type, from a few weeks to several months. Priority processing is available with some authorities for an extra fee.
What if I have no formal qualification?
Some authorities, such as ACS, offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and TRA and VETASSESS have pathways based on work experience.
Can I use one skills assessment for different visas?
Yes, if it is for the same occupation and still valid, but some visas need a specific assessment type.
What happens if my assessment is negative?
You can often seek a review or appeal with the authority, or reapply with better evidence. Talk to us before reapplying.
