Parent Visa Permanent

To be eligible for the Contributory Parent visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Applicants cannot apply if they have already applied for, or hold, a Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa (subclass 870).

• An approved sponsor is required:

  • The applicant’s child aged 18 or older can act as a sponsor.

  • If the child is under 18, an eligible relative or community organisation can sponsor.

  • The sponsor must be approved by the Department of Home Affairs.

  • If the sponsor passes away, applicants holding a Temporary Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173) may still be eligible.

• Applicants must pass the balance-of-family test, meaning at least 50% of their children (including stepchildren) must reside in Australia as Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens.

• An assurance of support is generally required to guarantee you won’t rely on government assistance after arriving in Australia. (Retiree applicants are exempt from this requirement.)

• Applicants must satisfy the immigration health and character requirements.

• Any debts owed to the Australian Government by the applicant or family members must be repaid or appropriately arranged.

• Applicants may be ineligible if a previous visa was cancelled or refused while they were in Australia.

• Retiree applicants must maintain comprehensive health insurance throughout their stay.

• Visa approval will consider whether granting the visa is in the best interest of any child under 18.
