If your partner is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, a Partner visa can let you build your life together in Australia. This guide from Study Mate Migration explains the onshore and offshore options, what you need to prove about your relationship and what it costs in 2026.
General information only, current at the date of publishing. Visa rules and fees change often, so always check the official Department of Home Affairs website or get advice before you apply.
Onshore or offshore?
Apply in Australia: subclass 820 and 801
You apply for the temporary (820) and permanent (801) visas together, and you must be in Australia when you apply. The 820 lets you stay while your permanent 801 application is processed.
Apply outside Australia: subclass 309 and 100
The offshore version works the same way, with a temporary (309) and permanent (100) stage. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when the temporary visa is decided.
Prospective Marriage visa: subclass 300
For couples who plan to marry in Australia. After the wedding you can apply for the Partner visa at a lower charge.
How much does a Partner visa cost?
The base application charge for the combined Partner visa is approx. AUD 11,700+ (varies) for most applicants in 2026. It is lower for Prospective Marriage visa (subclass 300) holders. Extra charges apply for dependent children, and you should budget for health checks, police certificates and translations.
Proving a genuine relationship
Home Affairs looks at four areas of your relationship:
- Financial: joint bank accounts, shared bills, assets and financial support
- Household: living together, shared responsibilities, lease or mortgage documents
- Social: being known as a couple by friends and family, joint invitations, travel together
- Commitment: your history together, time spent apart and plans for the future
You don’t need every document, but your evidence should tell a clear, consistent story. Statutory declarations from people who know you as a couple are also common.
De facto or married?
Married couples need a valid marriage recognised in Australia. De facto couples generally need to show at least 12 months of relationship, although registering your relationship with an Australian state or territory can help in some cases.
Processing times and priorities
Partner visa applications are processed according to Ministerial Direction, and processing times vary. A complete, well-organised application is the best way to avoid delays and requests for more information.
Common mistakes
- Lodging with thin evidence and planning to “add it later”
- Inconsistent dates between statements and documents
- Applying in Australia while holding a visa with a “No Further Stay” condition
- Not declaring previous relationships, visas or refusals
