A visa application can shape your study, career and family plans for years, so who you trust with it matters. This guide from Study Mate Migration explains what a Registered Migration Agent is, how to check an agent’s MARN, and what you should expect from professional migration advice in Australia.
General information only, current at the date of publishing. Visa rules and fees change often, so always check the official Department of Home Affairs website or get advice before you apply.
Who can give migration advice in Australia?
In Australia, only Registered Migration Agents and Australian legal practitioners can lawfully give immigration assistance for a fee. Education agents can help with course and college applications, but visa advice should come from someone who is registered or legally qualified.
What is a MARN?
A MARN is a Migration Agents Registration Number. Every Registered Migration Agent has one, and it should be shown on their website, business documents and advertising. Study Mate Migration’s visa advice is provided by a Registered Migration Agent, MARN 2518899.
How to check an agent’s MARN
- Go to the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) website, mara.gov.au
- Use the Find a registered migration agent search
- Enter the MARN or the agent’s name
- Check that the registration is current and the details match the business you’re dealing with
What a registered agent must do
Registered Migration Agents must follow the Code of Conduct. In practice, that means you should expect:
- A copy of the Consumer Guide, which explains your rights
- A written agreement that sets out the services and the fees before work starts
- Honest advice about your options, including when a visa is unlikely to succeed
- Regular updates and access to copies of documents lodged on your behalf
- Confidentiality and proper handling of your personal information
Warning signs to avoid
- Anyone who “guarantees” a visa outcome
- Advice from an unregistered person who charges for visa help
- Requests to include false information or documents
- No written agreement, or fees that are unclear or keep changing
